Will a Breast Lift Give Me Obvious Scars?
Many women considering a breast lift are concerned about scarring. Board-certified and fellowship-trained plastic surgeon Dr. Joshua Greenwald understands this concern and strives to put our patients at ease by providing detailed education before every procedure.
Serving patients in NYC, Westchester County, and Fairfield County, Dr. Greenwald’s approach to surgery is based on treating each patient like family. He takes the time to ensure their goals and motivations are clear before moving forward.
During your consultation, Dr. Greenwald explains what to expect from your breast lift, including how incision techniques can minimize scarring. He also provides detailed information on the healing process and how to manage any scars resulting from the surgery. Here are the details you need to know before your breast lift.
Incision Techniques for Breast Lifts
A breast lift generally involves some scarring. However, Dr. Greenwald uses advanced incision techniques to reduce visible marks. These incision methods include:
• Periareolar Incision: Circular incision around the areola (the darker skin surrounding the nipple)
• Vertical Incision: Incision starting at the bottom of the areola and ending at the bottom of the breast
• Inframammary Incision: Horizontal incision underneath the breast fold
A breast lift commonly includes all three of these incisions. This allows Dr. Greenwald to access all parts of the breast to create a substantial lift.
The periareolar incision is virtually invisible because it’s concealed within the darker skin of the areola. The vertical incision is the most prominent of the three incisions because it features a straight-down line. The inframammary incision is prominent yet hidden beneath the breast.
In some cases, Dr. Greenwald may perform a “short-scar” breast lift in which he uses only periareolar and vertical incisions. However, while scarring is lessened, this type of breast lift doesn’t produce as extensive results.
Finally, patients who only need very minimal lifting may opt for a “mini” breast lift with just a periareolar incision.
During your consultation, Dr. Greenwald will assess your body type and aesthetic goals to recommend the most appropriate incision technique.
Will a Breast Lift Leave Visible Scars?
While some scarring is expected after a breast lift, Dr. Greenwald’s expertise ensures that the scars are as discreet as possible. After surgery, he provides specific aftercare instructions to help your scars heal properly and quickly.
Some of the steps you can take include:
• Keeping the incision areas clean
• Avoiding excessive sun exposure
• Using silicone gel or other scar-reducing treatments as prescribed
With proper care, scars become less noticeable as they heal. Ultimately, most patients barely notice them.
