At What Age Is Plastic Surgery Appropriate?

As many of you know the Kardashian/Jenner family has been in the media more than usual lately, if that is even possible, regarding their use of plastic surgery. We have all heard about Bruce/Caitlyn Jenner and his plastic surgery quest to become a woman; however, the cameras are now being turned to the youngest family member Kylie Jenner. When asked about the obvious enhancements to her lips she explained the change was caused by sticking her lips inside soda bottles, causing them to swell, giving an enhanced lip appearance. (more…)

Warning: Your Supplements May be Dangerous for Plastic Surgery

For many, taking supplements is considered part of their daily health regimen. But did you know that they may cause complications during plastic surgery? Many people know to talk to their doctor about the medications they are taking before they have surgery. But supplements, considered “natural” by most people, can oftentimes have just as dangerous an effect on surgery as medications do. They have been known to worsen bleeding and inflammation during and after surgery, raise blood pressure and alter blood sugar levels. (more…)

Important Lessons to Draw From Plastic Surgery Reality TV Show Botched

This past week, the popular plastic surgery reality series and ratings juggernaut, “Botched” returned to E! Entertainment Television after a much-hyped but successful first season. Although, I am not typically a reality TV fan, I try to stay updated with current pop culture, especially when it involves the industry of plastic surgery. For those of you not familiar with the series, the basic premise of the show revolves around two Beverly Hills plastic surgeons who are asked by patients to correct undesirable outcomes as a result from procedures performed by another plastic surgeon, or in many cases from a non-plastic surgeon. Unfortunately, a majority of these unhappy patients portrayed on the show did not take the proper steps to research board-certified plastic surgeons and may have opted for a “cheaper” or more convenient option including having surgery abroad or simply putting their trust in an unqualified provider. Sadly, I see unsatisfied patients in my practice similar to the ones featured in the show who require complicated and costly revisional surgery to correct procedures performed elsewhere. You’ve heard the saying, you get what you pay for -often this is the case in plastic surgery. Bargain shopping should be saved for shoe sales not for selecting a plastic surgeon. (more…)

The statistics are in! According to the procedural statistical data for 2014 released this month from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), two standout stats include increases in non-surgical fat reduction and butt augmentation surgeries. The ASAPS data shows that there was a 43 percent rise in non-surgical fat reduction procedures and a whopping 86 percent increase in buttock augmentation surgeries, as compared to 2013. Why are these procedures so popular? Dr. Greenwald explains the procedures involved in these growing trends, and what you need to know if you’re considering any of these procedures. (more…)

The Keys to Healthy Looking Skin

Having healthy skin takes a certain amount of effort on your part. However, the keys to achieving or maintaining healthy skin may be simpler than you think. Here are a few easy things you can do to get healthier skin.

#1: Never Go to Bed Without First Washing Your Face

You should always wash your face before bed. Period. Over the course of each day, dirt, makeup and pollutants accumulate on your skin. If you don’t wash your face before bed, all this debris can clog your pores, leading to acne.

#2: Apply Sunscreen Every Day

Many people mistakenly believe that they do not need to apply sunscreen when the sky is cloudy. However, the sun emits damaging ultraviolet rays every day, regardless of whether it is overcast. To achieve or maintain healthy skin, it is imperative that you apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15 each morning before you leave the house. (more…)

How Do I Know Whether I Need a Breast Lift With My Augmentation?

At the plastic surgery practice of Dr. Joshua A. Greenwald, we see many patients who do not know whether they require breast augmentation surgery with implants, breast lift surgery or a combination of the two to achieve their aesthetic goals. If this sounds familiar, and you, too, are uncertain which procedure is best for you, keep reading. New York breast surgeon Dr. Greenwald shares the following ways to tell whether breast implants, breast lift or both are right for you.

When Breast Implant Surgery Is the Answer

In general, women who want to improve the look of small or sagging breasts benefit from breast implant surgery alone when: (more…)

What to Look for in Before-and-After Photos

Most plastic surgeons are happy to share before-and-after photos of their past patients with new patients. If you meet with a plastic surgeon who does not want to show you a photographic portfolio of his or her work, you should be wary of the surgeon.

When you get the opportunity to peruse a plastic surgeon’s before-and-after photo gallery, there are several things you should look for, to help ensure you achieve the aesthetic results you desire. New York City plastic surgeon Dr. Joshua A. Greenwald explains what they are.

#1: Look for photos of patients who have a similar body type and frame as you.

That way, you can get a good idea of the type of results you can expect. For instance, if you are a petite woman with little body fat who is seeking breast implant surgery, you should not reference a photo of a woman who is 6 feet tall and has thicker skin and a higher percentage of body fat. This is because the type and size of implants needed will most likely be different for the two of you. (more…)
