Can Plastic Surgery Make My Legs Skinnier?
In the past, Dr. Joshua Greenwald has blogged about common “problem” body areas with unwanted fat: primarily the abdomen, hips and buttocks. An area that he hasn’t spent a lot of time blogging about is the legs. But don’t take the lack of blogs to mean that plastic surgery cannot improve the appearance of the legs. In fact, Dr. Greenwald actually offers several plastic surgery procedures in New York City to give thick or “stumpy” legs a longer and leaner tone.
Liposuction
As you may already know, liposuction is the gold standard of body fat reduction, including reducing pockets of fat on the legs. Liposuction is most effectively used to reduce fat on the inner and outer thighs, the area right below the buttocks (sometimes referred to as a “banana roll”) and the area around the knees. It is less commonly performed on the calves and ankles.
For the best results, the target area should have thick, elastic skin that is able to retract over the slimmer leg. Individuals that have a lot of loose or excess skin on the legs may be better suited to another procedure. Removing fat with loose skin may create the illusion that the legs “deflated” or have a poor contour.
Thigh Lift
Thigh lift accomplishes two goals at once: reduces the amount of unwanted fat and trims excess, loose skin. This is a great option for someone that has lost a lot of weight (perhaps from bariatric surgery), has significant sagging skin and tissues and needs more sculpting than liposuction alone can provide.
SmartLipo
If you are bothered by a small amount of fat on your thighs or knees, you may be eligible for a non-surgical alternative to liposuction known as SmartLipo. This advanced system uses laser energy to break up unwanted fat and tighten loose skin. Although the results are not as dramatic as liposuction or thigh lift, SmartLipo is a safe and effective option to consider with Dr. Greenwald.
