The Latest Advancements in Breast Augmentation
The technology and techniques used in cosmetic surgery procedures are always evolving. This is one reason it is crucial for individuals pursuing plastic surgery to undergo their procedure with a board-certified plastic surgeon who is committed to staying at the forefront of advancements in plastic surgery, such as NYC plastic surgeon Dr. Joshua A. Greenwald. Here, Dr. Greenwald reviews two of the latest advancements in breast augmentation that he is excited to share with his patients.
Highly Cohesive Silicone Gel (“Gummy Bear”) Implants
The FDA approved the newest generation of breast implants in 2012 and 2013: highly cohesive silicone gel implants, also known as “gummy bear” implants thanks to their gummy-like consistency. Currently, three American manufacturers produce this type of breast implant. In contrast to traditional silicone gel implants which are comprised of a more viscous filling material, gummy bear implants are comprised of a form-stable, highly cohesive silicone filling material.
One of the principal benefits of highly cohesive silicone implants is that they are less prone to rippling or folding within the implant pocket, regardless of whether the patient is reclining or standing. In addition, the form-stable silicone material stays intact, even when the implant is cut directly down the middle. This means the filling material will stay together either within the implant pocket or extremely close to it if the implant ruptures, making it easier for the surgeon to remove the filling material during surgery.
Another advantage of gummy bear implants is that they are available in a wide range of shapes and sizes, including a teardrop shape, which is more anatomically correct. This newest generation of breast implants is often well suited for patients undergoing surgical breast reconstruction following mastectomy or lumpectomy to treat cancer.
Enhanced Techniques for Fat Grafting
Imagine taking unwanted fat from one area of your body, such as your abdomen, and transferring it to another area of the body that you would like to enhance, such as the breasts. This is called natural fat grafting, or fat transfer, and it is now a viable cosmetic surgery option!
Thanks to recent advancements in fat grafting methods — specifically, improvements in fat purification techniques — the procedure is now easier to perform and provides long-lasting results. To perform fat grafting to enhance the breasts, Dr. Greenwald performs liposuction on an area of the body that has excess fat (e.g., the abdomen, hips, thighs, buttocks) to harvest the surplus fat cells there. After purifying the adipose (fat) cells, the New York breast augmentation surgeon then re-injects the cells into the breasts. He may massage the area to ensure even distribution of the fat, and voilà: The patient achieves an enhanced bust line. Two caveats: Suitable candidates for the procedure only desire a natural degree of augmentation (Patients who desire further enhancement may require breast implants). Also, the procedure may need to be repeated if the body absorbs too much of the transferred fat.
Fat grafting is an excellent way to enhance not only the breasts but the posterior as well. Fat grafting can also be used to fill in facial lines.
