Which Aesthetic Conceners Does A Tummy Tuck Procedure Treat?
Perhaps you have heard of “tummy tuck” surgery, but are not quite sure what it is or which aesthetic concerns it treats. If this is the case, you have come to the right place! New York City surgeon Dr. Joshua Greenwald, serving Connecticut tummy tuck patients, is happy to share some basic information about tummy tuck surgery with you.
What Is Tummy Tuck?
Abdominoplasty, or “tummy tuck” surgery as it is more commonly known, is a body contouring procedure. This plastic surgery procedure is designed to give patients a flatter, firmer abdominal area.
What Does It Treat?
Major weight loss, the natural aging process or pregnancy can cause skin on the midsection to lose elasticity and start to sag. These agents (pregnancy in particular) can also severely weaken abdominal muscles, even causing them to separate. Tummy tuck treats these aesthetic concerns.
How Does It Differ From Liposuction?
Dr. Greenwald performs liposuction on patients with good skin elasticity and muscle tone. Liposuction is intended exclusively for the removal of unwanted excess fat.
In contrast, tummy tuck is intended to remove excess drooping skin and to repair greatly weakened or separated stomach muscles. However, Dr. Greenwald can perform liposuction during tummy tuck surgery for patients who have excess fat in addition to excess lax skin and weak stomach muscles.
What Happens During Tummy Tuck?
To begin tummy tuck surgery, Dr. Greenwald creates a horizontal incision in the pubic area, extending from hipbone to hipbone. Although a significant incision is required for tummy tuck, Dr. Greenwald places it in an area that can be easily hidden beneath the underwear or bikini line.
He then eliminates excess skin, repairs weakened abdominal muscles by applying internal sutures to certain tissues in the area and performs liposuction if needed. Dr. Greenwald then re-drapes the remaining skin and repositions the navel to align with the new abdominal contour. Finally, the New York City plastic surgeon closes the incision with stitches.
Although tummy tuck plastic surgery is a substantial undertaking, the aesthetic result of having a toned, taut abdominal profile can restore your self-confidence and make it fun to wear a bathing suit again!
